Note: Due to time constraints this week (I’m planning on doing a community spotlight every day this week leading up to the NHL draft, preparing for the draft and packing for vacation) I’m going to be skipping the introductions and jump right to the Spotlights this week. There will be no spotlights next week while I’m gone.
Today’s #CBJ Community Spotlight features a great guy and fellow #CBJ flag carrier, Chris Walker.
Who is Chris? In his own words:
My name is Chris and I live in Hilliard, Ohio with my 2 dogs, Yoda (@Yoda_Pug) and Bella. I graduated from The Ohio State University, and although I earned a degree in History (Early Modern Europe), I work as a software analyst for a company based out of San Francisco. I’ve been a Jackets fan since the team was founded, having previously been a Chicago Blackhawks fan.
In addition to hockey, I am a big fan of many sports – the NFL, European Football (soccer), F1 and Baseball. When not watching sports, I spend a lot of time reading, writing, traveling when possible and studying different things.
On to the questions!
The easy questions:
1. Favorite #CBJ player & why:
Right now, I’d have to go with either Jack Johnson or Derek Dorsett. Both bring an incredible amount of energy to the team and play night-in and night-out with everything they have. I know many people focus more on skill than “heart”, but right now our team needs to define it’s character and identity.
2. Favorite non-#CBJ player & why:
Scott Harnell (@Hartsy19). The guy is hilarious and makes the game his own on the ice (when he can stay upright ). I love how he has embraced the “Hartnell Down” gag and turned it into something to help the community.
3. Favorite #CBJ moment:
It is really hard to say. As much as I have great memories of us making the playoffs for the first time, I am not sure it matches the memories I’ve made meeting new Twitter folks this year. It has been absolutely wonderful getting to know fellow fans and being able to build friendships from a common interest.
4. Favorite general hockey moment:
Probably Messier’s game 6 guarantee in 1994, and the outcome of that game and then their win in Finals.
5. Team you would root for if #CBJ had never existed (not moved):
Well, as I said earlier, I was a Blackhawks fan before the Jackets came around. Anymore though, that club has lost their identity, and I am just not sure I could support them. I’d have to say I’d probably be a Flyers fan. Great city and a awesome group of players.
6. Favorite non-#CBJ jersey (in general, not that you own):
Some tougher questions:
7. What are your expectations for the #CBJ in the next 1, 3 and 5 years:
- 1 – Round out the team and be a contender to make the playoffs.
- 3 – Consistent playoff contender and go beyond the first round.
- 5 – Late playoff team each year and a Cup contender.
8. If you were GM of the #CBJ, who do you draft at second overall & why:
I think we must go for Nail if available. That kind of talent is not available every draft and I believe we are in a position where we need to dive at the opportunity. If he is not available I’d go for Alex Galchenyuk. While there is no doubt Grigorenko is talented, the last thing the Jackets need is a player with questions about work ethic and attitude.
9. Would you rather see the #CBJ be more competitive next season but miss the playoffs or get another high draft pick & why:
I would rather them be competitive, hands down. While I understand building for the future is important, the team and the fan base need to see improvement now. As the old adage holds, “Winning solves everything.”
10. Can you list something(s) that you like and something(s) you’d like to see changed with the #CBJ community:
I think we have a great blog community and social media core, but I really want people to make sure they focus more on the positives. Constant focus on the negatives does nothing – we know we aren’t great, and so does the team. Additionally, it does nothing to help attract new fans if the current ones do nothing but bellyache.
11. Who are 5 #CBJ twitter accounts you think more people should be following?
There are so many good ones I am not sure where to begin. In no particular order: @RobMixer, @AlisonL, @SirChadlyOC, @brettemichel, @AKrygier. It feels wrong to only list 5, but all these ones are amazing.
12. Any shout outs you want to give or blogs/twitter accounts you want to help promote?
Definitely want to mention The Union Blue (www.theunionblue.com) as a great new blog. As far as twitter accounts, as I noted above, there are a ton of good ones, so here are some more! @Canadan82, @RedditCBJ, @cmanesh_, @CPFro3, @CBJProspects, @JeffSvoboda, @frickindannie, @bunktuzzi44 and @Greegor23
I’d be remiss if I didn’t throw some love to some other great accounts, albeit they root for other teams. @MikePatota, @Garts2Point2, @JudsonK17 and @DownGoesAvery. All are exceptional and passionate fans.
13. Any final thoughts… on anything?
A couple things. First, remember the season is 82 games long – there will be ups and downs, winning streaks and losing streaks. Enjoy each game as a whole, and don’t get too caught up in what the media says. Second, there is a great group of fans here, so get involved. We constantly have outings and get together for all sorts of things. I promise we don’t bite.
